San Fedele Musica, in collaboration with the Milano Civica Scuola di Musica, is pleased to present Off-Topic: Beyond the Avant-Gardes, an experimental program featuring acoustic, mixed, and electronic music, ranging from the historical avant‑garde to Dubstep and IDM.

The live performance by an ensemble of ten musicians, alternating with acousmatic works, has been curated to highlight the points of convergence and contact among the various musical currents and genres of the past sixty years.

“Once the innovative charge of the historical avant‑gardes of contemporary ‘art’ music has faded, once aesthetic dogmas have fallen and genre taxonomies have become blurred, today’s musical landscape appears as a vast sea in which each person charts their own course, no longer guided by the compass of labels and ideologies.

With a colorful acoustic/electric ensemble, we present major avant‑garde composers of the twentieth century, remakes of progressive rock and heavy metal, and new original works, alternating them with the captivating sonic magic of the Acousmonium by Giovanni Cospito and Dante Tanzi.

We have designed this enjoyable journey for you, exploring the ruptures and the analogies/convergences that run through the different languages of contemporary music. You will encounter more than one surprise.”

OT ENSEMBLE (OT = Off‑Topic: off theme, out of context, off subject) brings together musicians of outstanding excellence from widely diverse backgrounds: from “classical” to contemporary “art” music, from rock to jazz, from early music to computer‑based musical technologies.

The fertile dialogue among these prominent individualities—each already well known in their own field—is at the core of OT Ensemble’s musical vision: an original approach to a potential repertoire spanning centuries of music, from the 1300s to the present day, following the thread of analogies and “ruptures” in musical languages, without any stylistic, generic, or performance‑practice boundaries.

With a colorful and polymorphic acoustic/electric instrumental ensemble, with original and surprising arrangements of ancient and modern works, and with new compositions—both their own and by others—OT Ensemble aims to open unexpected perspectives on contemporary listening.

“The idea that everything must resemble what happens in Nature, just as we see it expressed by Nature itself in the specific form of the human being. And what does this conception bring about? That everything is one single reality: roots, stem, flowers.

And, according to Goethe’s conception, the same can be said of the vertebrae of the human body. The human being has a series of vertebrae, all similar yet each different from the other. And according to Goethe, one could conceive an infinite number of plants.

This is also the meaning of our compositional style. (…) The further one proceeds, the more everything becomes identical, and in the end one has the sensation of no longer being confronted with the work of a human being, but of Nature.”
