Gianluca Capuano (I)

Gianluca Capuano is an Italian conductor, organist, and musicologist, and one of the leading figures in the Baroque repertoire and historically informed performance practice. Born in 1969, he trained as an organist and theorist, developing a profound knowledge of sources and musical rhetoric. Since 2019, he has served as the Principal Conductor of Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco, an ensemble founded by Cecilia Bartoli, with whom he tackles the great operatic and sacred repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. His approach combines philological rigor with a strong theatrical sensitivity: a close focus on the text, prosody, the relationship between voice and orchestra, and the dynamics of gesture. Capuano has conducted in major international theaters and festivals, collaborating with leading soloists and also editing critical editions. His presence in contexts such as the sacra rappresentazione at San Fedele is part of a body of work that views early music not as a museum repertoire, but as a living language capable of speaking to the present. Capuano’s conducting highlights the internal structure of the works and their rhetorical architecture, restoring to sacred music a dramatic force that is often blunted by more generic interpretations.
