Stefan Betke, born in Düsseldorf in 1967, is the founder of the Pole project and one of the pivotal figures who, between the late 1990s and early 2000s, redefined the boundaries between techno, dub, and minimalism. His signature style emerged from a famous technological accident: a malfunctioning analog filter (the Waldorf 4-Pole, which gave the project its name) whose background noise, a characteristic crackle, became the structural core of his music. With his celebrated trilogy of albums 1, 2, and 3, released between 1998 and 2000, Betke established an aesthetic based on subtraction, the fragility of the signal, and the tension between geometric order and microscopic imperfection. His work is a deconstructed dub stripped to the bone, where deep sub-bass lines support architectures of micro-variations, rustles, and granular details that seem to surface from an erosion of sound matter. Alongside his work as a composer and performer, Betke founded the ~scape label and the Scape Mastering studio in Berlin, becoming an absolute point of reference for sound engineering in contemporary electronic music. His most recent works continue to investigate the vulnerability of technology, translating errors and the unexpected into a minimal composition style of high emotional density, capable of speaking both to the physical space of the club and to contexts oriented toward an intimate, focused listening.
