Andy Stott (UK)

Andy Stott was born in Manchester in 1984 and grew up in a city marked by a long industrial and club tradition. His recording career, tied almost entirely to the Modern Love label, has gone through several phases: from early releases closer to techno and dub techno, to the radical breakthrough of Passed Me By and We Stay Together (2011), where his sound became slowed-down, granular, saturated, and almost warped. With Luxury Problems (2012) and Faith in Strangers (2014), he defined a language in which deep sub-bass, broken rhythms, dense textures, and processed vocals (often those of Alison Skidmore) combine into an instantly recognizable aesthetic. Stott works on contrast: weight and delicacy, opacity and intimacy, noise and melody coexist within the same piece. His music is often described as a ‘deconstruction’ of club music, but it would be more accurate to speak of a translation: he takes materials tied to the dancefloor and brings them into an introverted, almost domestic listening space, without losing their physical dimension. In recent years, he has continued to explore hybrid forms between abstract pop, ambient, and bass music, maintaining a rare coherence.
