Carmen Villain, born Carmen Hillestad in Oslo in 1983 to a Mexican mother and Norwegian father, initially moved through the worlds of fashion and songwriting before turning to ambient and electroacoustic research, establishing herself as one of the most refined voices in contemporary ambient music. Her releases on Smalltown Supersound, such as Infinite Avenue and Both Lines Will Be Blue, showcase a composition style that blends field recordings, processed flutes, acoustic instruments, discrete electronics, natural noises, granular textures, and a voice that is often whispered or transformed. Villain works on resonance, slow layering, and the construction of atmospheres that seem to emerge from an interior rather than a geographical place. Her compositions are not mere ‘backdrops’: they are sonic micro-ecosystems where every element—a breath, a rustle, a flute blow, a faint drone—carries a precise weight. She has collaborated with Bendik Giske, Huerco S., and Jenny Hval, and has created works for radio, installations, and performance contexts.
