From Sept. 25 to Dec. 4 at Milan’s Auditorium San Fedele is the fall edition of INNER_SPACES, the electronic music and audiovisual arts festival that has been a point of reference for experimentation and interdisciplinary research for more than a decade. Entitled “Memory and Creative Continuity,” the season aims to emphasize more explicitly than in previous editions the desire to integrate listening itineraries that span different historical eras, while keeping electronic production in the foreground.

Music is an art in the making, each time seeking new formal solutions, new sound complexes, and elaborating the expression of a poetics of the present. But, at the same time, current production in the field of music is mindful in a more or less conscious way of the living heritage of great works produced throughout history. As in those films of Andrei Tarkovsky, the inspirational source of Inner_Spaces from the very beginning, when the poetry of images and dialogues is amplified by intense musical cues drawn from the compositions of J.S. Bach, Giuseppe Verdi, Beethoven, as well as the use of synthesis sounds, ambient noises, sound layers and studio compositions. There is an inseparable line connecting past and present, even crossing areas of apparent rupture with what precedes. The present is always in a position of indebtedness to the past, from a historical memory that it precurses, from which it comes.

Another original aspect of INNER_SPACES Autumn 2023 is the presentation of an “Italian school” with artists of different generations who have won, each on their individual merits and in different contexts, an international audience. From the dean Francesco Messina, who for the first time ever performs the cult album “Prati bagnati del monte analogo” live, to Alessandro Cortini, undisputed master of synthetic sounds; from Donato Dozzy, in a new guise with his totally analog equipment, to the youngest of the group, producer Marta Salogni.
