The inaugural concert for 2018/19 season was organized in collaboration with Archivio Storico Ricordi and the Isabella Scelsi Foundation. A new approach will be carried out for the rest of the season with specific commisions and world premieres.

In the first part of the concert, the return of Valerio Tricoli in Auditorium San fedele, a leading exponent of the new international electroacoustic scene. Specialist in analog manipulation in the footsteps of the pioneers of the twentieth century, the Palermo author will present a new project starting from unpublished material: some improvisations by the visionary composer Giacinto Scelsi on the Ondiola electronic keyboard. Valerio Tricoli presented a work born from an investigation carried out on precious archive materials that testify to the originality of the legacy of Giacinto Scelsi whose thirtieth anniversary occurs of the disappearance.

Valerio Tricoli illustrates his work:

“Scelsi’s compositional method, as is known, included the writing in the score, often performed by third-party transcribers, of improvisational recordings, or sequences of sounds, performed by Scelsi on the Ondiole – monophonic synthesizers suitable for reproduce timbres of winds and strings – and on the piano, as well as variable speed pours of orchestral or ethnic music – often bordering on an almost noisy use of the turntable -, feedback modulations, spoken fragments or more or less random environmental recordings, and improvisations with other musicians. The corpus of tapes of this type left by Scelsi is about 500 units.
In particular, the two tapes I worked on for this composition include feedback sequences and manipulations on the turntable (tape 168/148) and improvisations on the piano and ondioles (tape 171/200). Except for some variations on tempo and pitch, equalization and reduction of (very loud) background noise, and the use of reverbs, I have left the basic materials as much as possible, reorganizing them into a multi-channel acousmatic composition that I hope will to be, more than anything else, appreciated by the Master in the thirtieth anniversary of his death “.

William Basinski closed the evening with On Time Out of Time, a work that the Texan composer offers as an Italian premiere, created starting from the detection of the acoustic phenomena generated by gravitational waves. The work is inspired by the astrophysical phenomenon of gravitational waves using the acoustic measurements of the LIGO observatory. By lengthening and delaying the sound samples, the sound ebbs outwards, becoming more and more musical through the addition of soft melodies, synthesizers and loops, meticulously assembled in an all-encompassing drone.

Before the concert The undisputed master of tape music will be interviewed in an exceptional meeting with free admission curated by Archivio Storico Ricordi.
